Why do reservoirs close?
Harmful algal blooms (HABs) are the #1 cause of summer advisories. Heat and nutrient runoff fuel cyanobacteria producing toxins that sicken people and kill dogs. HABs in Utah are increasing at 4.5 new occurrences per year and now appear earlier and at higher elevations. Check deq.utah.gov July–September before every visit.
E. coli is separate from HABs. Salem Pond received an advisory in August 2025. Swimming is discouraged when advisories are active; fishing and boating usually remain OK.
Drought and low water concentrate nutrients and raise temperatures. Utah reservoirs dropped 10% between June and July 2025 vs. the typical 2% seasonal drop. Silver Lake Flat is especially affected — draw-down begins in July.
Winterkill affects shallow high-elevation ponds. Silver Lake Flat freezes completely — ice blocks oxygen and kills fish. The DWR restocks each spring; fishing immediately after spring stocking is often excellent.
Invasive mussels. All watercraft must complete the free DWR mussel course annually. Non-compliance carries significant fines.
