Relocating families ask me this constantly: how close is Utah County to the ski resorts?
I sell homes in Saratoga Springs, Eagle Mountain, and Lehi. All three are in Utah County. And I'm going to give you the honest answer that most real estate posts won't: Utah County is not the closest county to most ski resorts. If skiing is your absolute top priority, there are cities in Salt Lake County that get you there faster.
But if you want Utah County for the value, the neighborhoods, the schools, or the lifestyle — and skiing is part of the picture but not the whole picture — here's what you actually need to know before you pick a city.
The Honest Baseline: Utah County vs. Salt Lake County
Let's start with context.
The Cottonwood Canyons — home to Snowbird, Alta, Solitude, and Brighton — are accessed from Salt Lake County via Little Cottonwood Canyon (SR-210) and Big Cottonwood Canyon (SR-190). The canyon entrances are near Sandy and Cottonwood Heights.
Per Alta Ski Area's driving guide, Alta is 26 miles from downtown Salt Lake City. Per Alta Chalets, the drive from Salt Lake City to Snowbird typically takes around 45 minutes without canyon delays.
From Sandy or Cottonwood Heights in Salt Lake County, you're looking at 30 to 35 minutes to Snowbird under normal conditions. That's the benchmark.
From Utah County, you're adding drive time to get to the canyon entrance first. How much you add depends entirely on which Utah County city you're in.
The Three Cities: How They Actually Compare
Lehi — The Clear Winner for Skiers in Utah County
Lehi sits at the I-15/I-80 interchange — the geographic gateway between Salt Lake County and Utah County. That positioning matters more than any other factor when it comes to ski resort access.
Estimated drive times from Lehi:
- Snowbird / Alta: 40 to 45 minutes via I-15 north to I-215, exit at 6200 South, up Little Cottonwood Canyon
- Park City / Deer Valley / PCMR: 45 to 50 minutes via I-15 north to I-80 east
- Sundance: 35 to 40 minutes via US-189 through Provo Canyon
- Solitude / Brighton: 45 to 50 minutes via I-15 north to I-215 to Big Cottonwood Canyon
Per Wanderlog's distance data, the drive from Lehi to Park City is approximately 52.8 miles with a typical drive time around 57 minutes in normal traffic — closer to 45 to 50 minutes in off-peak winter morning conditions heading toward the mountain.
Of the three cities I work in, Lehi gives skiers the most resort options with the least driving. If skiing is a meaningful factor in your relocation decision, Lehi is the right Utah County answer.
Saratoga Springs — Doable, But You Feel the Extra Time
Saratoga Springs is 10 to 15 minutes farther from most ski resorts than Lehi. The route to the Cottonwood Canyons adds distance going north through Lehi and onto I-15 before connecting to I-215.
Estimated drive times from Saratoga Springs:
- Snowbird / Alta: 50 to 60 minutes
- Park City / Deer Valley / PCMR: 55 to 65 minutes
- Sundance: 40 to 50 minutes via US-189
- Solitude / Brighton: 55 to 65 minutes
For weekend skiing — leaving at 8am on a Saturday, skiing until 3pm — Saratoga Springs works fine. The extra 10 to 15 minutes is background noise when the day is already long.
Where you feel it: powder days. When 18 inches fell overnight and the alarm goes off at 5:30am, the 10 to 15 extra minutes to get to the canyon entrance are 10 to 15 minutes of fresh tracks someone from Sandy already has. If you're a serious powder chaser, that adds up over a season.
Eagle Mountain — The Honest Hard Sell for Skiers
I love Eagle Mountain. The value is real, the community is real, and the new construction is strong. But I'm going to be straight with you about the skiing.
Eagle Mountain is the farthest west of my three cities. It sits 10 to 15 minutes west of Saratoga Springs, which is already 10 to 15 minutes behind Lehi. By the time you add it all up, Eagle Mountain is adding 20 to 30 minutes to Lehi's times.
Estimated drive times from Eagle Mountain:
- Snowbird / Alta: 60 to 75 minutes
- Park City / Deer Valley / PCMR: 65 to 75 minutes
- Sundance: 50 to 60 minutes
- Solitude / Brighton: 65 to 75 minutes
A serious skier who picks Eagle Mountain over Lehi purely for resort access is making a mistake. That doesn't mean you shouldn't buy in Eagle Mountain — there are plenty of reasons to — but skiing access is not one of them. Go in with that understanding.
The Powder Day Reality
Drive times are only part of the story. Here's what actually happens on a big snow day.
Little Cottonwood Canyon closes. Per UDOT's Cottonwood Canyons road conditions page, Little Cottonwood Canyon (SR-210) closes regularly during and after heavy snowfall for avalanche control and road clearing. Per Alta Ski Area, the road is a dead-end canyon — there's no alternate route when it's closed. When an Interlodge is called, even people staying at the base can't move.
When the canyon opens after a closure, everyone who has been waiting enters at the same time. Canyon road congestion becomes significant. Your 40-minute Lehi drive can become 90 minutes.
UTA Ski Bus is the workaround. Per Visit Salt Lake, the UTA Ski Bus (Route 994) runs from the Historic Sandy TRAX station to Snowbird and Alta — free for qualifying season pass holders. For Utah County residents willing to drive to Sandy and park, this is a real option on busy snow days.
Utah traction laws are real. Per UDOT and Alta Ski Area, state law requires all vehicles entering the Cottonwood Canyons between November 1 and May 1 to have 4WD or AWD with snow tires, or snow chains. Check your vehicle before you move here.
Park City is generally more reliable to access. I-80 to Park City stays open through most storms because it's a maintained highway, not a canyon dead-end. On days when Little Cottonwood is closed, Park City is often still accessible.
Sundance: The Closest Resort to All Three Cities
Most out-of-state buyers focus on Park City and the Cottonwood Canyons. Sundance Mountain Resort doesn't always make the list.
Sundance sits at the top of Provo Canyon — about 35 to 40 minutes from Lehi, 40 to 50 minutes from Saratoga Springs, and 50 to 60 minutes from Eagle Mountain. It's the closest major resort to all three Utah County cities.
Sundance is smaller than Park City or Snowbird and doesn't have the terrain variety of Alta. But it's genuinely uncrowded relative to the Cottonwood resorts and accessible for a Utah County skier who wants to ski more days without a 5:30am alarm. For families with kids learning to ski, or skiers who prioritize low crowds over sheer vertical, Sundance is worth taking seriously.
When Utah County Is Not the Right Answer
If skiing is your primary driver for where to live — 40-plus days a season, Cottonwood Canyons on every powder day, access time matters more than home size or price — look at Salt Lake County first. Sandy, Draper, and Cottonwood Heights put you 30 to 35 minutes from Snowbird and Alta. Some neighborhoods in Cottonwood Heights are 20 minutes from the canyon entrance.
That's a meaningfully different life for a serious skier.
Utah County makes sense for a skier when:
- Skiing is one priority among several — schools, space, value, community
- You're comfortable with a 40 to 65-minute drive for weekend skiing
- You want Sundance or Park City more than the Cottonwood Canyons
- Home value and space matter and you're willing to trade some access for them
- You're a casual to moderate skier doing 10 to 20 days a season
Quick Reference: Drive Times by City
